Operations
At this time, the team operates in Advanced Life Support (ALS) mode only
with ALS certified medics traveling in pairs. Drugs, fluids, advanced airway,
oxygen, defibrillation, and monitoring equipment are carried. Both teams carry a variety of injury treatments. These include bandages, ice packs, and splints.
Because the size and weight of the equipment, the bicycle medics must
travel in pairs-with one carrying the oxygen and the other carrying the
Automated External Defibrillators (AED). Since the bikes allow easier and more rapid access to patients
at large events, they decrease the amount of time the patients have to go
without medical care. Mounted saddlebags carry the equipment.
The Team currently consists of nine members of which most are certified
through the International Police Mountain Bike Association. In addition to
the initial items purchased through the grant, the Team has received six
retired bicycles from the City of Fort Myers Police Department with which they will
activate four additional bicycles and use the remaining for parts and
repairs.
